What an afternoon! Our local Music Teachers Association teamed up with a local coffee shop to offer an Open House to benefit Nektario's Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young adults with disabilities attain independence, purpose, and joy. (nektarios.org) As many as 45 students and teachers shared music in a comfortable setting, while customers enjoyed coffee, hot cocoa, pastries, and holiday shopping.
I myself had never performed in such an environment. It was quite a different performance arena, nothing like I had ever experienced. It was loud! We had rehearsed a delicate piece, Magic Christmas, by Lena Orsa, full of snowflakes and fairy dust. The subtleties we had worked so hard on in rehearsal were lost in the hustle and bustle of the coffee shop. We offered instead snowballs and sleigh rides! But oh, what fun! Then Christmas Jingle for Three, (yes, 3 performers, 6 hands, one piano) easily filled the space with jingle jingle jingles. I was happy to have performed our pieces early in the program so I could share my dynamics experience with those following. Forget subtleties, just give it your all and have fun!
It was a great community event. Bringing music out of the studio and into the community. Everyone who attended enjoyed the atmosphere, the food and drink, the shopping, and the music!
